We learned a lot during the process, and we want to share some insights.

We would also appreciate if you would share Don’s story if you feel comfortable. Thank you in advance.

Working with Don was a pleasure. His simple humor and constant talk of hope was contagious. It was also challenging at times filming since everything had to be explained in detail to him so he could be a part of the project. Neither Danny or Jon had ever worked closely with someone who had been blind from birth so we had to be in a constant position of learning. Don always desired for people to understand blindness better and how to converse with a blind person.

Tips from Don:

  1. When walking with a blind person, be sure not to push them around. Each person has their own preference, but there is no need to push and pull. Gently help guide them.

  2. Describe what is going on. Even the very simple aspects of life can pass by and without an explanation a person suffering from blindness can be disoriented very quickly.

Defining Blindness:

  1. There are different types of blindness. Some are partially, while others are fully blind. Some may have been able to see at one point in life but for Don, he was born 100% blind.

  2. Each type of blindness brings about challenges, but for Don having never seen a single thing before present a new set of challenges.

Notes from Don:

  1. Don always talked about the School for the Blind in Kansas City and the impact it had on his life. He was so grateful for the education and how they taught him to live a productive life in the world.

  2. He loves his home church, Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka, KS. He loves the teaching and worship each week. He also volunteers on the prayer team.

  3. One of his favorite things to listen are Nebraska Cornhuskers football games. He is truly a die hard fan.

  4. Finding a job is incredibly difficult for someone with blindness.
